FILMS X JENI’S: The Sixth Sense
I’ve decided to take two of my favorite things in the world - cinema and Jeni’s Ice Cream - and combine them. I introduce to you Films x Jeni’s: a blog series in which I review my recently watched films and subsequently pair them with the Jeni’s ice cream flavors that fit them best. Whether you’re looking for your next movie to watch, Jeni’s flavor to try, or simply want to be entertained by the way my brain processes information, grab your popcorn and enjoy the show.
Above: me after watching The Sixth Sense
I’m not a scary movie person, but I’ve been slowly submerging myself into thriller world over the past few years because as long as I’m not imagining demons in the corner of my room every time I turn the lights out, then I’m pretty good (RIP when I was tricked into watching The Conjuring). Seeing as The Sixth Sense is a classic, in a spout of bravery I thought I’d give it a whirl. This is my story.
This movie really needs no introduction. It’s a classic for a reason so I’m not going to analyze it because twenty-three years of notoriety has given people plenty of opportunity for that. The only thing I will remark on in the way of plot is that I went into this knowing the plot twist, and I can’t express how disappointed I am by that. All I could think about is how amazingly mind-blowing it would have been had I not known the twist, so my biggest piece of advice would be that in the off-chance that you are in the 1% of people who hasn’t already seen this movie, don’t let anyone spoil it for you. If you’re under the impression that the twist is that the little boy sees dead people, you’re wrong.
What I mainly want to speak to is the scare factor. As stated before, I’m not a horror movie person. My imagination is too overactive and will convince me that something is watching me from the dark corners of my room on a good day, let alone a day where I’ve just given it two hours of terrifying inspiration to pull from. There is a fine line between something that will keep me on the edge of my seat and something that will keep me awake for nights on end.
During this watch, there were definitely some moments that were slightly chilling. I did turn my lamp back on halfway through the movie just for a little added security. However, for the most part, I made it through watching it alone and really thought this was in my ability level to the point where I told my roommate that it wasn’t a really scary movie.
Cut to: a few hours later when I’m sleeping with the covers over my head.
So I rescind my “not a scary movie” statement. Perhaps if my radiator hadn’t been clicking like someone trying to break in my window then I would’ve slept better, but the image of some demented ghost sliding in through my curtains and clawing my back just somehow didn’t give me sweet dreams.
So if you’re a borderline scary movie watcher like I am, beware? I haven’t really found a method to my madness yet because somehow things like Get Out and It didn’t keep me up at night, but The Sixth Sense and Zodiac did.
Would I watch it again? As long as no one leaves my side for the following 48 hours.
Tear level: Teared up at the end, probably would’ve shed a tear had I not known the twist.
Watch when: you want something to put you on the edge of your seat.
Soundtrack/score: too scared to remember.
The Jeni’s Pairing
This is just a whole pint of Green Mint Chip for the chills and dire need to stress eat the entire thing during the movie.
